Comet Images

Due to the ever increasing number of images, the image page has been reorganized. Each comet now has its own sub-page.

If you plan to republish any of the images presented on the COHP (on the Web, USENET, or in print), you are strongly advised to obtain permission from the person who took the image. My understanding of copyright laws is that all material is effectively copyrighted and the lack of a "copyright" does not void that protection. For explicitly copyrighted images, there is no grey area. You must obtain permission from the person who took the image.

Information on submitting images is provided here. (Updated 2/26/96)

Images are available for the following comets...

Dates indicate when the sub-page was last updated.

Other Comet Images

Jim Scotti was the first to provide images to this page. As a member of the Spacewatch Telescope team, Jim and other members of Spacewatch monitor comets and Earth-approaching asteroids. Several comets have been discovered by Spacewatch. The most recent was P/1996 A1 (Jedicke).

Carl Hergenrother, Lunar and Planetary Lab, maintains a nice page with recent images and news of comets, including many faint comets. By agreement, his images will be posted on this page after he is finished with them (He only posts a single image of each comet). Images of 9P, 32P, 74P, and 120P were provided by Carl Hergenrother.

The most prolific contributor in the Northern Hemisphere to this image page is Tim Puckett of Villa Rica, Georgia. Tim images all comets, not just the bright ones. He maintains his own home page on The Puckett Observatory that shows his impressive array of telescopes and his images of comets and other objects.

Telescopes In Education (TIE) 24" (60 cm) Telescope on Mt. Wilson, CA.

The ST-6 CCD images taken by the author were made using the TIE 60cm f/3.5 reflector on Mt. Wilson. The telescope produces images of 13.9'x10.5 that reach 20th magnitude in an unfiltered 40 second exposure. This telescope is available for use by schools (K-12th grade) and amateurs. More information on the TIE program (including more images ... some of galaxies) can be found here.
